Description
The Galapagos Islands host a remaining 12 extant sub-species of the Giant Tortoise across seven of the islands. The Santa Cruz highlands and Alcedo Volcano on Isabela have the largest populations. On islands with humid highlands, the tortoises are larger, with domed shells and short necks; on islands with dry lowlands, the tortoises are smaller, with saddleback shells and long necks.
