On a frosty morning on the top of Mount Haleakela on Maui, a ladybug crawls inside the fleshy leaves of the Silversword plant. The rare and delicate Silverswords, called 'ahinahina in Hawaiian, can live up to 90 years but flower only once in their lifetime then die leaving seeds to the wind.

Working as a professional fish biologist, I focus on salmon ecology and ecosystem restoration.
